SHEBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Taliban key commander was killed following an airstrike in northern Afghan province of Jawzjan, police said Thursday.

Turan Amrullah, Taliban senior military commander for Jawzjan and Faryab provinces, who has long been pursued by security forces, was killed together with scores of his fighters early Thursday morning, after an airstrike targeted terrorists' hideouts in Darzab district of Jawzjan, Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, spokesman of Police 707 Pamir Zone based in the area, told Xinhua.

No comment had been immediately made by Taliban on the incidents.

The Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where the militants have been recruiting from among the youth.
