LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Security forces launched major operations against Taliban bastion in Nad Ali district of the restive Helmand province with Lashkar Gah as its capital 555 km south of Kabul on Thursday, said a statement of regional police zone released here.

The units of police and army backed by aircrafts launched the operations early morning and have recaptured several villages, besides inflicting casualties on Taliban fighters and forcing militants to flee, said the statement.

Nad Ali district has been regarded as Taliban's bastion in the troubled Helmand province and local observers believe that evicting Taliban militants from Nad Ali would facilitate government forces to easily dislodge the armed insurgents from Marja, Gereshk and areas around provincial capital Lashkar Gah.

Taliban militants who have controlled some districts of the poppy growing Helmand province have yet to make comment on the situation.
