ANKARA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Turkish parliament approved Tuesday to extend the ongoing nationwide state of emergency for more three months.

The move was recommended by cabinet and the National Security Council on Monday.

In the parliamentary voting, the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) voted in favor of the extension, while main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and People's Democratic Party (HDP) were against it.

This is the fifth extension of the state of emergency since July 2016 when there was a failed military coup allegedly plotted by U.S.-based exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen.

According to Turkish constitution, during the state of emergency, the cabinet has the right to issue statutory decrees under the president of the republic without regard to routine procedures and restrictions.
