5.6-magnitude offshore quake strikes south of Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture, no tsunami warning issued

TOKYO, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck off the coast of Amami-oshima island, south Kagoshima Prefecture, in the middle of the Amami Island chain and Osumi Peninsula, on Thursday, the weather agency here said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor occurred at 6:02 p.m. local time, at a latitude of 28.3 degrees north and a longitude of 131.5 degrees east.

The JMA said the quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 km, registered 3 on Japan's seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7, in parts of Kagoshima Prefecture.

It registered between 1 and 2 on the scale in the prefectures of Miyazaki, Saga and Kumamoto, the JMA said.

The weather agency did not issue a tsunami warning as a result of the quake and there have been no immediate reports of accidents or injury as a result of the quake.
