KABUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Five militants were arrested following a joint operation in Parwan, eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, authorities said.

"Personnel of fourth Battalion of Afghan National Army Corps 201 Selab, together with Afghan National Police, launched a joint operation Sunday morning in Baba Khel, an area in outskirts of Charikar city, capital of eastern Parwan province. As a result five militants were arrested," the army corps said in a statement.

Two automatic guns, three hand guns, along with ammunition and four motorcycles, were seized following the raid in the province.

The Bagram Airfield, the main U.S. and NATO airbase, is located in Parwan, 55 km north of Afghanistan's capital of Kabul.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up military operations against militants as the Taliban militants and Islamic State (IS) fighters are attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions ahead of winter in the mountainous country.

The Taliban has yet to make comments.
