WUHAN, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Preparations for the seventh Military World Games (MWG) are well underway in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, said Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense Friday.

The event, being held in China for the first time, lasts from Oct. 18 to Oct. 27 in 2019.

Servicemen and women from across the globe will compete in 27 sports. Badminton, table tennis, men's gymnastics and tennis will be listed into competition for the first time in the history of the games.

"China will take this opportunity to boost friendly exchanges among world armed forces and the development of military sports," Wu said at a news briefing.

The MWG is a multi-sport event organized every four years by the International Military Sports Council, and the first summer Games was held in 1995 in Rome, Italy.

The MWG is sometimes referred to as the "Olympic Games for the armed forces."
