HANOI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese firms are making vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease, an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals to lessen Vietnam's reliance on import.
Now, Vietnam has to spend 40-50 million U.S. dollars importing 20-30 million doses of vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease each year, the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Tuesday.
In recent years, cattle in Vietnam have sometimes been hit by foot-and-mouth disease which has very severe implications for animal farming.
The virus causes a high fever for approximately two to six days, followed by blisters inside the mouth and on the feet that may rupture and cause lameness.
