BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- The "Internet Events in China: Touching 2016" award ceremony was held at Communication University of China on January 21.
Ten grassroots heroes selected by netizens from candidates across China were honored.
These heroes are ordinary citizens whose modesty and good hearts have impacted our society significantly.
They are: He Xinglong, a village doctor born in the 1980s. He has been working in a poor village in China for 16 years. Whenever a villager gets sick, he is always on call. He often offers free medication to people who cannot afford to pay. Local folks all speak highly of him, saying that he is more caring than their own sons.
Liu Tianming, a volunteer deeply involved in charity work. As a migrant worker, Liu has been helping getting financial aid for more than 20,000 stay-at-home children over the last 16 years, the total amount reaching over 5 million yuan. He is a role model for migrant workers and has inspired many other ordinary workers to contribute to philanthropic causes.
Liu Mei, a therapist for autistic children. She has been providing rehabilitation training and counseling services for more than 1,000 families with autistic children for the last 11 years, and has trained more than 100 teachers. She has raised the public’s awareness of autism.
Pang Qiyuan, a village CPC committee leader who always wears rubber shoes at work. The rubber shoes are suitable for walking long distances, which enables Pang to visit villagers constantly to hear their concerns and draw up meticulous plans to better their lives. The villagers see him as their guide on the road of alleviating poverty.
Jiang Chuanchun, director of a rehabilitation center in the city of Hengyang, central China's Hunan Province. He is determined to help drug addicts recover and stay clean and has given countless people a new lease of life.
Wei Deyou, a senior volunteer who has been patrolling China’s border for more than half a century, covering over 100,000 kilometers. The 76-year-old Wei lives in a mud hut, drinks saline water and combats the dangers in the wilderness. He is a “living boundary monument” on the border line of China.
Chen Yucun, the director of the Fuzhou Panda World, has been taking care of pandas like his own children for the last few decades. The 73-year-old Chen is still working in the research center. He intends to keep these pandas' company for as long as possible.
Li Jinlong, who drew praise for a photo in which he’s asleep with a lunch box in his hand. The photo was taken after Chen had been fighting the flood in southwest China’s Guizhou Province for four days and three nights. His spirit has made people realize that the most beautiful thing is not an impeccable face but a sincere heart that always puts the people’s interests first.
Zhang Chongyu, who traveled 700,000 kilometers and sent out 3,000 letters to collect the profiles of 138,000 Red Army soldiers. Zhang helped to launch the construction of the largest group of Red Army tombstones in China.
Wang Chun, the “dreambuilder”on an island in the South China Sea. When he turned 50, Wang spent two years trying to make the fishermen’s lives better. He installed electric lights in their homes and made fresh water available. He also buit an island ring road for the fishermen so that they could live and work in peace and contentment. And the island has become a great breeding habitat for seabirds.
These grassroots heroes are from Shanxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Fujian, Guizhou, Sichuan as well as other provinces and cities.
Their stories first emerged and widely spread on the Internet, and have influenced millions of netizens through the Internet. They are a great force for promoting healthy and positive social atmosphere.
The poll of grassroots heroes is initiated by Xinhua News Agency, and organized by Xinhuanet and the “Internet Events in China” column of Xinhua News Agency. It has been successfully held for seven consecutive years since 2010.
It’s the first public welfare event in China which features grassroots people as subjects of news reporting and public voting on the Internet.
The award ceremony was supported by the China Social Welfare Foundation Xinhua Almsdeed Foundation, the One Foundation and the "i-dB Project", and was broadcast live on LeTV.
