KATHMANDU, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) Khadga Prashad Oli, also known as KP Oli has been elected as the 38th Prime Minister of Nepal.

Nepal's Parliament on Sunday elected Oli as the new prime minister nearly a month after the Himalayan country adopted a new constitution on Sept. 20.

63-year-old Oli secured 330 votes to become the prime minister when 587 lawmakers cast ballots in the prime ministerial election while Oli's rival and Nepali Congress President Koirala received 249 votes.

Oli secured majority votes as he was backed by the third largest party (UCPN-Maoist), fourth largest party Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (Nepal) and other fringe parties in the Nepali Parliament.

The CPN-UML, a communist party, emerged as the second largest party from the Second Constituent Assembly election held in Nov. 19, 2013.
