DAR ES SALAAM, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian aviation experts were investigating plane wreckage found on Pemba Island off its coast for link to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a senior official said on Saturday.
Makame Mbarawa, Tanzanian Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, said experts from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) have been dispatched to the scene of the wreckage on Pemba Island.
"We are also contacting the International Civil Aviation Organisation to assign international experts to investigate the wreckage," Mbarawa told Xinhua by phone.
On Saturday, reports quoted Australia's Transport Minister Darren Chester as saying a "piece of aircraft debris" was found on Pemba Island.
Chester is overseeing the search for the Boeing 777 that vanished in 2014, with 239 people on board.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is conducting the search on Malaysia's behalf, was seeking further information to determine whether the debris is from flight MH370, Chester said in a statement.
"This debris is quite large... only if it is confirmed to be that of Boeing 777 will we send an investigation team there to study whether it really belonged to MH370 or not," Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai was quoted as saying.
The Beijing-bound flight MH370 disappeared in March 2014 shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur. Enditem
