Source: Xinhua   2016-07-08 23:57:39

TAIPEI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan police said Friday evening that they have identified a middle-aged man receiving treatment in an ICU for severe burns as the main suspect in Thursday's explosion on a commuter train.

Through DNA tests, police confirmed the man surnamed Lin as the suspect. His motive remains unclear as he still cannot speak.

The explosion happened on commuter train as it approached Songshan Station at about 10 p.m. Thursday. A fire which broke out after the blast was put out in a few minutes.

Twenty-five people, including the suspect, were injured. Five are in a serious condition.

Lin placed a red canvas bag in a toilet on the train containing adhesive tape similar to that on the outer surface of a steel tube containing the explosive device.

Lin's DNA was found on the bag and tools in it. His clothes and shoes had clear marks of powder burns, indicating he was very close to the explosive device when it went off, said police.

Police said the explosion was a criminal case rather than a terror attack.
