KATHMANDU, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Nepal on Monday appointed 11 persons in the post of Justices at the Supreme Court which have been vacant for a long time.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari appointed the Justices in a special ceremony held at President's Office Sheetal Niwas amid the presence of outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The appointment came following the endorsement of names of Justices by the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee on Sunday.

Deep Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Sharada Prasad Ghimire, Mira Khadka, Bishwambar Prasad Shrestha, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, Hari Krishna Karki, Anil Kumar Sinha, Prakash Man Singh Raut and Sapana Pradhan Malla are the Justices who were sworn in Monday.

Mira Khadka and Sapana Pradhan Malla are two female Justices of the apex court. Among the 11, seven were the sitting chief judges of appellate court whereas four were senior advocates.

According to the new Constitution of Nepal, Supreme Court should have 21 Justices including the Chief Justice. However, it was running only through half of the capacity due to which many cases are yet to be addressed.

Local media reported that the apex court has over 23,000 cases to deal with.
