Yemen's Houthis install "political council" with national gov't in sight

SANAA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's dominant Shiite Houthi group and its ally former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's party named Saturday members of "political council," which would unilaterally rule the country, local media said.

The political council is made up of 10 senior officials, who dominate the decision making in the country politically, militarily, security and economically, said a joint statement carried by Houthi-controlled Saba news agency.

They appointed Houthi senior leader, Saleh al-Sumad as the President of the council, and Kasim Labuzah of former President's party as the Vice President, Saba said.

The declaration was made in a ceremony in the presidential palace in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa.

They said the council's next mission is to form a new "national government."

The political council, which former President Saleh called "presidential council," was declared on July 28 by Houthi and Saleh's party to rule the country once the ongoing UN-sponsored peace talks with their foes of internationally recognized government in Kuwait collapsed.
