Iranian president urges U.S. to fully implement nuclear deal

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Thursday called on the U.S. to rectify its "flawed approach" so as to fully implement the Iran nuclear deal reached last year.

"Any failure in implementing the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) will further erode the credibility of the United States in the world," Rouhani said in an address before the United Nations General Assembly, referring to the Iran nuclear deal.

The nuclear deal, reached between Iran and world powers in July last year, was implemented in January. The deal saw Iran scrapping major part of its nuclear program in return for the removal of Western and international sanctions.

Though Iran has been allowed to sell its oil, U.S. financial institutions are still barred from dollar transactions involving Iran, a major hurdle for global companies to do business with Iran.

"The lack of compliance with the JCPOA on the part of the United States in the past several months represents a flawed approach that should be rectified forthwith," Rouhani said.

However, the Iranian leader hailed the nuclear deal as providing "important lessons for resolving complicated international problems."

The deal "represents a creative approach and method for constructive interaction with a view to peacefully resolving crises and challenges," Rouhani said.

Eight months after the implementation of the deal, Iran's economy is showing "clear improvement," and is expected to register a 5 percent growth rate by the end of this year, the president said.
