Twin bombings rock Syria's Hama city, casualties feared

Source: Xinhua   2016-10-03 19:55:26

DAMASCUS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Two explosions detonated near a main square in the central province of Hama on Monday, amid reports of casualties, according to Syria's national TV.

One of the bombings, which occurred near the al-Assi Square, was carried out by a suicide bomber wearing explosive belt, said the report.

Further details about the explosions and number of casualties are still forthcoming.

Battles have been raging recently in the northern countryside of Hama, following a major rebel offensive apparently aimed at distracting Syrian military forces from their assault on the northern city of Aleppo.

Hama is among the very few cities that haven't witnessed much violence during the country's long-running conflict, save for some spots in its countryside.
