TOKYO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo fire fighters have been tackling a fire that caused huge plumes of thick black smoke to dominate an otherwise clear sky in Tokyo Wednesday afternoon.

Both the police and the firefighters have been dispatched to one of Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s (TEPCO) facilities in Saitama Prefecture, just outside Tokyo, probing the cause of the incident at TEPCO's related sub-station.

Along with the investigators, TEPCO believes there is a possibility that the facility's power transmission line may have been damaged during the fire and resulted in a widespread blackout across the Tokyo Metropolitan areas, leaving some 350,000 houses without electricity, local media reported.

TEPCO, the police and the firefighters, as quoted by local media, said that investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing, but that they had not received reports of injury or damage as a result of the large scale power outage.
