2 U.S. police officers shot dead in Iowa in ambush-style attacks

Source: Xinhua   2016-11-02 21:08:48

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. police officers were shot dead in their cars early Wednesday in what the police called ambush-style attacks in two separate locations in Des Moines, the largest city in the state of Iowa.

The officers "were gunned down when they were sitting in their cars," Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department, said at a news conference. The second was fatally shot at a location about a five-minute drive from the first scene.

"There is a clear and present danger to police officers. There's definitely danger out there right now," said Parizek.

"It doesn't look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars," the police spokesman added.

"We're developing some suspect information right now," he said. "There's nothing that we can share. As soon as we've got something that we can put out, it's coming out."

Killings of police, especially in apparent ambush-style, have risen in the United States this year. The country has also witnessed a higher level of tension between the black community and police.
