Terrorists in Syria use air strike pause to intensify attacks: Russian military

MOSCOW, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Terrorist groups in Syria have taken advantage of the pause in Russian and Syrian air strikes in the 10-km zone around the city of Aleppo to intensify their attacks, the Russian military said Thursday.

Over the past week, terrorists opened artillery fire in the western regions of Aleppo 64 times, killing 127 and wounding 254 civilians, Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, chief of the Russian General Staff's Main Operational Directorate, said in a statement.

The terrorists have also made several attempts to break into parts of the city under control of the government forces, he added.

Russia has not delivered any air strikes against rebels in Aleppo for 18 days.

Last week, the Russian military asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to resume air strikes against militants in eastern Aleppo due to terrorist attacks, but the Russian leader refused, saying it is "inappropriate at the current time."

On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a new humanitarian pause against militants in Aleppo for 10 hours on Friday, opening corridors for the exit of rebels and evacuation of civilians and the wounded.
