SADC Beach Volleyball teams to battle in Namibia

WINDHOEK, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Namibia will host two beach volleyball championships and 9 southern African countries are scheduled to take part in both championships set for the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia.

Gunter Rust, President of the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NFV), on Tuesday told Xinhua that the 2016 Zone VI Club championship will take place from Dec. 12 to 16 at the Dome followed by the Zone VI Beach Volleyball Club championship set for Dec. 18 to 19.

Angola, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa, Malawi, as well as the host nation, Namibia, will participate in the first ever Zone VI Club championship which will include sixteen teams per gender and four Namibian teams per gender, Rust said.

"The championships will be played in different stages, starting with the group stages, followed by the quarter finals and semi-finals with the finals slated to take place on Dec.16," Rust said, adding that the winners will automatically qualify for the African Club Championship.

According to Rust, the first ever zonal Beach Volleyball competition, the Zone VI Beach Volleyball Club championship will also be held between the ten countries that entered sixteen teams per gender of which three teams per gender are from Namibia and the championship will be played in a double elimination format.

Vice-President of NFV Hillary Dux Imbuwa said that this will be one of the biggest volleyball events ever hosted in the country and the event is set to help develop volleyball in Namibia.
