Turkish warplanes hit IS targets in northern Syria

Source: Xinhua   2016-12-07 16:28:41

ANKARA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Turkish fighter jets have resumed airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) positions in Syria's al-Bab, destroying nine positions, Hurriyet News reported Wednesday.

Turkish warplanes carried out air strikes in al-Bab on Tuesday night, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement, adding that 4 IS shelters, three headquarters and a tank were destroyed in the air strikes.

While the Turkish-backed Syrian opposition has staged a siege west of al-Bab, Turkey's aerial campaign has only continued on and off in northern Syria due to the Syrian Air Force's threat to Turkish warplanes.

Ankara has assured Russia that its military offensive does not target Aleppo, but merely al-Bab, in northern Aleppo province.

Meanwhile, an Iranian-made unmanned drone was used in an attack on a Turkish military camp in northern Syria on Nov. 24, killing four soldiers, a senior Turkish official has told the Hurriyet News.

Turkey identified the drone as Iranian-made, but it was still not identified whether Hezbollah, the Quds Force or another Shiite militia group in Syria had used it, said the official on condition of anonymity, Hurriyet News reported Wednesday.
