VIENTIANE, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Lao vovinam team said on Tuesday that it has a good chance of winning gold medals at the fourth Vovinam Championship to be held in Cambodia.
Their optimism is based on their performance at the third Vovinam Championship in Myanmar in 2014 when the Lao team placed third with five gold medals.
Coach Viengsouk Hangngeun and the team, which features a good mix of internationally experienced fighters and talented younger competitors, left for Cambodia on Tuesday ahead of the championship, which is to be held on January 11-14, reported state-run Vientiane Times.
Following the championship in Cambodia, the Lao team will turn their attention to the World Vovinam Championship later this year in 2017.
At the Asian Beach Games held in September and October 2016 in Vietnam, the Lao vovinam team won one gold and six bronze medals.
The Lao vovinam team's other successes include a gold medal, four silver and six bronze medals at the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam in 2009; two gold and five bronze medals at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia in 2011; along with two gold, three silver and four bronze medals at the SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013.
The team also won four gold medals at the ASEAN Vovinam Championship in Myanmar in 2013.
