BANGKOK, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 people in Koh Samui, a world-renowned Thai resort island, have been hit by dengue.

Since early December, Koh Samui hospital has admitted a total of 128 dengue patients, one of whom was pronounced dead, said Thirasak Viriyanond, director of the hospital, on Tuesday.

That number of dengue patients in Koh Samui, mostly aged between 15 and 35 years, was considered alarmingly large, Thirasak said.

Most of the dengue patients were reported as migrant workers hired at hotels, guesthouses and restaurants throughout the tourist island off Surat Thani province in southern Thailand, according to the hospital director.

He advised Koh Samui islanders and visitors to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, use mosquito repellents and eliminate mosquito larvae and stagnant water which could otherwise be a breeding ground for the dengue carriers.
