YAOUNDE, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cameroonian President Paul Biya on Wednesday saluted the National Football Team for winning the champion of 2017 African Cup held in Libreville, capital of Gabon.
Cameroon's National Football Team defeated Egypt by 2-1 in the final on Sunday, and it was their fifth champion in African Cup after 1984 in Cote d'Ivoire, 1988 in Morocco, 2000 in Nigeria and 2002 in Mali.
Eliminated in the first round in the previous African Cup held in Equatorial Guinea in 2015, the Cameroonian team was not the favorite for the champion before the kick-off.
Biya saluted the comeback of the national team, saying "Attention, Cameroon is back." Biya said in a ceremony held on Wednesday in Presidential Palace that the victory immersed all Cameroonians in joy.
"I am proud of you. We are proud of you," he said. The president said the same thing after Cameroonian National Women's Football Team won the runner-up in 10th African Women's Cup of Nations in December in Yaounde.
National team capitain Benjamin Moukandjo thanked President Biya, the football leaders and the Cameroonian people for their support which is an important factor for their victory.
After the ceremony, the players toured Yaounde city for the presentation of the trophy to the people. Enditem
