LISBON, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo e Sousa Tuesday praised the medical team at Lisbon's Santa Marta Hospital which carried out the country's first artificial heart implant Monday.
"This surgery intervention confirms the scientific progress and the excellence of the work of a team which is part of the national health service," Rebelo de Sousa said in an official statement.
The artificial heart implant took place at Lisbon's Santa Marta Hospital and was carried out by surgeon Jose Fragata, who called the operation a success.
An artificial heart was implanted into the chest cavity of a 64-year-old man who had kidney disorder and suffered from heart failure, according to Fragata.
