Zambia wins U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Senegal

LUSAKA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Sunday lifted the 2017 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Senegal in the finals during a pulsating match played at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, the country's capital.

The Junior Chipolopolo overcame a spirited Senegalese after two goals scored by striker Patson Daka in the 17th minute and midfielder Edward Chilufya in the 35th minute.

The National Heroes was filled to capacity as thousands of soccer fans, led by President Edgar Lungu, turned up to watch the final game of the tournament which started on February 26 which had eight teams divided in two groups.

In reaching the finals, the Zambian beat Guinea 1-0 in the first game in Group A before giving Mali a 6-0 bashing and then handed Egypt 3-0. In the semifinals the team overcame South Africa through 1-nil.

On the other hand, Senegal, draw 1-all with Sudan, beat South Africa 4-3 and the trounced Cameroon 2-0 in Group B to storm the finals where they overcame Guinea 1-0.

In an earlier kick-off, Guinea defeated South Africa 1-0 to get bronze.

Four teams that stormed the semi-finals of the tournament will represent Africa at the 2017 FIFA World Cup finals to be played in South Korea in May.
