KABUL, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan intelligence agency had captured a would-be suicide bomber in the restive southern province of Helmand, the National Directorate for Security (NDS) said on Thursday.
"A would-be suicide bomber named Sayyed Nabi has been detained after personnel of NDS carried out a special operation in surrounding area of provincial capital Lashkar Gah recently," the intelligence agency confirmed in a statement, without revealing the exact date of the raid.
"The captive, who is a member of Taliban militant group, tried to conduct a suicide bombing in a crowded area of the city," it said.
The statement added that the timely arrest of the man has foiled a major terror attack and saved the city, some 555 km south of the Afghan capital.
The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants recently as spring and summer known as fighting season are drawing near in the Central Asian country.
