MACAO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has decided to set up a committee to strengthen the management and development of the maritime zones, the Official Gazette reported on Monday.

According to an administrative order signed by the SAR's Chief Executive Chui Sai On, the newly-established committee shall monitor and evaluate the management of the maritime zones, promote studies and overall plannings of the sea areas, and formulate laws and regulations regarding the management and use of maritime areas.

Led by the chief executive, this special committee is made up of principals of Secretariat for Administration and Justice, Secretariat for Economy and Finance, Secretariat for Security, Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, Secretariat for Transport and Public Works, and leaders of other main government departments.

The costs of running the committee will be borne by the budget of the office of the chief executive.

Under a map of administrative divisions approved by the State Council, an 85-square-kilometer sea area to the east and south of Macao has been administered by the Macao SAR since Dec. 20, 2015.

Last June, the Macao SAR government established an interdepartmental coordination commission directly headed by the chief executive to carry out medium- and long-term research on the utilization of the sea area.
