BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities have started to reform the Chinese Young Pioneers (CYP) to make the national organization for Chinese children more attractive, cohesive and influential.

The Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Ministry of Education and the CYP national working committee have recently published a reform plan to kick-start the process.

The system of CYP congresses and working committees will be improved, the plan said, requiring that more than 50 percent of delegates at CYP congresses at county level and above should be CYP members.

First founded in 1949 and led by the Communist Party of China, the CYP is a national mass organization for Chinese children aged 6 to 14 years, mostly primary and secondary school students.

Other reforms include improving the organization's services, introducing more cultural products favored by children, and regulating the selection, appointment and adjustment of counsellors.

"The reform is designed to make young pioneers and counsellors love the CYP more, and make the CYP more attractive, cohesive, dynamic and influential," said an official with the CYP national working committee.
