VIENTIANE, March 22 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 players will compete for medals at the Lao Badminton Federation Secretary's Cup in capital Vientiane this weekend to select talents for regional sport events.

The badminton competition, to be held from March 24-26, comprises competing categories of U13, U15, and senior players until 60 years old, Lao state-run media Vientiane Times reported Wednesday.

This tournament aims to promote junior player development and friendly competition and fitness for senior players.

The federation will take the opportunity to run the ruler over the best junior players for possible selection in the national team for the ninth School Games of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to be hosted by Singapore on July 13-21.

Meanwhile, open level players will be eyeing a spot on the Lao badminton team for the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia from August 19-31.

The federation sent the Lao student badminton team to the eighth ASEAN Schools Games in Thailand last July where they won a bronze medal. Enditem
