Equipment collapse kills 9 at China power plant

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-25 19:19:52

GUANGZHOU, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Nine people died and two were injured when an operation platform collapsed at a power plant in south China's Guangdong Province Saturday, local authorities said.

The accident happened at around 8 a.m. at No. 7 Thermal Power Plant in the provincial capital Guangzhou, said Li Chibin, deputy chief of the work safety administration of Conghua District.

He said 10 workers were working on the 40-meter-high platform when it gave way. Another worker who was working on the ground was buried in the rubble.

Li blamed the construction of the platform for the accident, saying it was too simple and not secure enough.

The two injured workers are being treated at No. 5 Hospital affiliated to Southern Medical University in Guangzhou. Hospital sources said they are in a stable condition.

The power plant, located in Conghua, is still under construction and expected to start operations in May.
