Tokyo stocks close higher on U.S. tax reform plan, yen's retreat

TOKYO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday as investor sentiment was bolstered by remarks by of the U.S. Treasury secretary about unveiling a tax reform plan with a softer yen adding to a buoyant mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 190.26 points, or 1.03 percent, from Thursday to end the day at 18,620.75.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 15.77 points, or 1.07 percent, to finish at 1,488.58.

Electric power and gas, rubber product and marine transportation-linked stocks advanced the most by the close of play, and advancing issues outpaced declining ones by 1,645 to 288 on the First Section.

On the main section on Friday, trading volume came to 1,862.44 million shares, rising marginally from Thursday's volume of 1,841.06 million shares.

The total turnover on the final trading day of the week was 2,239 billion yen (20.48 billion U.S. dollars).
