CIS plans to create joint aerospace defense system

MOSCOW, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS) is planning to create a joint aerospace defense system for the destruction of space attack weapons, a local newspaper reported Monday.

The creation of the joint aerospace defense system of the CIS integrates the joint regional air defense systems of the CIS, which is capable of fulfilling aerospace defense tasks, said Col. General Viktor Bondarev, the commander-in-chief of the Air and Space Forces of Russia.

"The concept of the aerospace defense was approved by the Council of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth on June 15, 2016," he said.

Bondarev also added that the participants of the CIS joint regional air defense systems have conducted over 25 command post training and 10 combat shooting exercise in 22 years. The participants are working on aircraft detection and assisting the aircraft crews conditionally in distress.

The CIS joint regional air defense systems were created on the basis of an agreement of ten Commonwealth countries on February 10, 1995. The term of the agreement is not limited and open for accession by other countries.
