COLOMBO, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Tuesday condemned the deadly attack in Manchester, England in which at least 19 people were killed and around 50 others were injured.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mahishini Colonne said that Sri Lanka was saddened by the attack in Manchester.

"Saddened by the attack in Manchester. SriLanka condemns this heinous act. Our thoughts n prayers are wt all those affected," she tweeted.

So far 19 people have been confirmed dead, with around 50 others injured in the explosion that hit Manchester late Monday night, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement released early Tuesday.

"This is currently being treated as a terrorist incident until police know otherwise," according to the statement.

Just before 10:35 p.m. local time on Monday, police were called to reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena, where a concert was being hosted.

Manchester Arena has a capacity of 21,000 people and local media reports said it was full for the concert.
