NEW DELHI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condemned the car bomb blast in the diplomatic district in Afghan capital Kabul.
At least 64 people have been killed and 320 others injured in the bomb explosion, the Interior Ministry of Afghanistan said in a statement.
"We strongly condemn the terrorist blast in Kabul. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased & prayers with the injured," tweeted Modi, who is currently on a six-day four-nation tour of Germany, Spain, Russia and France.
The prime minister also reiterated the country's commitment in fighting terror. "India stands with Afghanistan in fighting all types of terrorism. Forces supporting terrorism need to be defeated," he added.
Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that all the staff of the Indian Embassy which is close to the blast site, are safe. "By God's grace, the Indian Embassy staff are safe in the massive #Kabul blast," she tweeted.
Manpreet Vohra, Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan, told an Indian TV channel "We are all safe, all our staff, all our personnel are safe. However, the blast was very large and nearby buildings including our own building have considerable damage in terms of broken glass and shattered windows and blown doors etc."
The bomb went off during the morning rush hour in Kabul. The blast struck close to the German embassy in Zanbaq Square with civilians were the main casualties.
