WUHAN, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chen Xuefeng, a former provincial-level official in central China's Henan Province, was given a life sentence for accepting bribes, embezzlement and abuse of power on Wednesday.

The sentence was handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Jingzhou City in central China's Hubei Province.

Chen was also deprived of his political rights for life and all his personal assets were confiscated, according to the ruling.

Chen confessed to his crimes in court.

Chen, a former member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China Henan Provincial Committee, was found to have taken advantage of his positions to seek benefits for others and of accepting money and assets worth more than 125 million yuan (18.3 million U.S. dollars) between 2000 and 2015.

Chen was found to have committed embezzlement of public funds worth 5.5 million yuan.

The court also convicted Chen of abuse of power in his arbitrary disposal of state assets, which caused losses of 224 million yuan to national interests.

The court decided to be lenient as Chen pleaded guilty, expressed remorse, returned his illegal gains and offered information on other crimes.
