NEW DELHI, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Bollywood actor Anupam Kher will play former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a new film.

The film is based on a memoir written by Singh's former media advisor Sanjay Baru.

Kher on Wednesday announced on Twitter that he was "looking forward to portraying" Singh in the film titled after the name of book - The Accidental Prime Minister.

"To reinvent yourself as an actor is to challenge yourself. Looking forward to portraying Dr Manmohan Singh in The Accidental Prime Minister," Kher wrote on twitter.

Kher is seen as a supporter of rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader Narendra Modi. He has often criticised Singh's Congress party, which was voted out of power in 2014.

Kher's wife Kirron Kher is a BJP lawmaker from Indian city of Chandigarh.

The film is likely to hit cinemas across India in winter 2018. Kher has shared the film's poster on his twitter account.

Baru's book gives an insider's account of Singh's first stint as Indian prime minister between 2004 and 2008.
