BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, known for his authentic performance approach to classical music, will lead his Orchestre des Champs-Elysees to perform in China in the coming week. [ The orchestra, in residence at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, will play Beethoven's Symphony No.5 and Symphony No.7 at the National Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of Beijing on June 15, the center said Sunday.

The performance is part of the global tour -- Herreweghe Beethoven Project -- to mark the orchestra's 25 founding anniversary.

Herreweghe, 70, is considered a key contributor to the historically informed performance movement, which attempts strict adherence to the original aesthetic criteria of the classical music. Music instruments and band sizes corresponding to the time are reintroduced to give audience an authentic feel.

In China, Herrenweghe is known as a top-rated conductor of the great symphonic works of Johan Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

At 23, he founded the Collegium Vocale Gent ensemble to pilot his unique musical approach. He later founded other groups and ensembles like the Ensemble Vocal Europeen specialized in Renaissance music and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysees for repertoire from the mid-18th to early 20th century.
