PHNOM PENH, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Friday set January 14, 2018 for the non- universal election of the fourth Senate, according to a government statement.
Hun Sen announced the date during the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers, the statement said.
Held every six years, the Senate election will be voted by Members of Parliament and commune councilors across the country.
Founded in 1999, the Senate, or the Upper House, has 61 seats, but the election will be held for 57 seats only as two senators will be appointed by nation's King Norodom Sihamoni and the other two by the National Assembly.
In the last election held in Jan. 2012, the ruling Cambodian People's Party won 46 seats against 11 seats for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.
The Sam Rainsy Party merged with the Human Rights Party in late 2012 to form a new party called Cambodia National Rescue Party, which is now the country's main opposition party. Enditem
