PHNOM PENH, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-five local tourists were injured Monday when their bus veered off a steep road and crashed into trees before overturning in the famed Bokor Mountain resort in southwest Cambodia's Kampot province, a provincial police chief said.

The accident happened at 4:30 p.m. local time when the bus was driving down the mountain road and its brakes failed, said Mao Chanmathurith, police chief of Kampot province.

"Six of the injured tourists were in critical condition," he told Xinhua via telephone, adding that the bus driver and his conductor also sustained injuries in the crash.

According to the police chief, the injured people had been rushed to a nearly hospital.

He said the victims working for a private company in Phnom Penh had rented the ill-fated bus for a sightseeing tour to the mountain top resort before the accident.

The 1,077-meter-high Bokor Mountain is one of the kingdom's most popular tourist destinations.
