RABAT, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan police have arrested four people with suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) group in the southern city of Essaouira, the Moroccan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the ministry's statement, the arrested suspects had pledged allegiance to IS leader Aboubakr Al Baghdadi and were planning attacks on key and tourist sites in the touristic city.

The police seized weapons and documents inciting violence, the statement said.

The North African kingdom has seen a growing threat from terror groups, especially IS.

According to official figures, Morocco busted 19 terrorist cells and arrested 273 suspects in 2016, most of them linked to the IS group.
