Crocodile kills man in S. India

NEW DELHI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A 65-year-old man was killed by a crocodile in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, police said Tuesday.

The man was killed while taking a bath in Kollidam river in Thanjavur district, 347 km south of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

"A man identified as Sellakannu of Anaikarai was killed by a crocodile while he was taking bath inside Kollidam river last evening," a police official said. "Though fishermen immediately rushed to the spot after hearing his cries but he couldn't be rescued."

Police said his body which had visible injuries was later fished out from the river.

Reports quoting local fishermen as saying that a crocodile dragged the victim deep into the water. Police officials have registered a case and initiated investigations into the incident.
