MADRID, July 6 (Xinhua) -- A married couple and two of their children were killed on Thursday in a canyon accident close to the city of Caceres in the southwest of Spain, the regional government of the Community of Extremadura said.
The accident happened when the four from the nearby town of Don Benito were surprised by rapidly rising floodwater in the canyon of Hoyos in the valley de Jerte region.
Authorities inform that the tragedy happened while the family were in a zone set apart for beginners in the sport which involves travelling in the water down narrow canyons, and that they were well equipped and accompanied by a monitor.
It appears they were surprised by a sudden rise in water levels following rainfall of between 34 and 52 liters per square meters in the region, which was on yellow alert as the result of rainstorms.
