ISLAMABAD, July 13 (Xinhua) -- At least four policemen, including a senior official, were killed and another one injured when their vehicle came under attack by four unknown gunmen in Pakistan's southwest metropolitan of Quetta on Thursday.

According to local media reports, the incident took place at 11:43 a.m. local time (0643 GMT) when the gunmen riding on two motorcycles sprayed bullets at their vehicle heading towards a police office at Arbab Ghulam Ali road in Huda area of Quetta, the provincial capital of the country's southwest province of Balochistan.

Three police constables died on the spot after being shot, while superintendent of Police Mubarak Shah and his driver were critically injured.

Police, security forces and rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the bodies and injured to the district hospital where the officer succumbed to his fatal bullet injuries during treatment.

The wounded driver of the vehicle is under treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital. However, doctors said he is in critical condition.

The militants fleed from the site after attacking the vehicle.

Police and security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation in the adjoining areas as well as increased checking at the police pickets.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan condemned the attack and expressed sympathies and condolences to the families of the deceased officials.

No group claimed the attack yet.

Earlier on Monday, three policemen, including a district police officer, were killed and 12 others injured when a police vehicle was attacked by a suicide bomber riding on a motorcycle in Chaman, a town of Balochistan province located at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
