WASHINGTON, July 21 (Xinhua) -- White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned Friday, The New York Times reported.

Spicer's departure took place after U.S. President Donald Trump appointed New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as the new White House communications director, a decision Spicer disagreed with, the report said.

Trump had asked Spicer to stay on but Spicer believed that hiring Scaramucci was a major mistake, according to the report.
