KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- An explosion struck a NATO convoy near an airport in Kandahar city, capital of Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar on Wednesday, leaving casualties, NATO's Resolute Support (RS) confirmed.

"Resolute Support can confirm that a NATO convoy was attacked this afternoon in Kandahar. The attack did cause casualties," it said in a statement.

The statement said that the RS was working "to gather additional information as quickly as possible and will release more details as appropriate."

A local police source told Xinhua earlier that the nature of the blast was a suicide car bombing.

"The running convoy was travelling to Kandahar International Airport, where a foreign military base is located, but the blast occurred in Shoorandam locality which is located in Police District 5 of the city," the police told Xinhua anonymously.

It was not immediately known if any passersby were harmed in the incident.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack came as war-weary Afghans have been witnessing a surge in attacks by Taliban militants and Islamic State (IS) fighters across the country.

Currently, around 13,000 foreign troops remain in Afghanistan to train and assist local security forces in their fight against the insurgents.
