SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Taliban key commander Mawlawi Ahmad Shah is among five militants killed in Faizabad district of Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province on Monday, provincial police chief Rahmatullah Turkistani said.

"Acting upon intelligence report, the security forces stormed Taliban hideout in Faizabad district early today morning killing Mawlawi Ahmad Shah along with four of his armed men," Turkistani told reporters here.

"Mawlawi Ahmad Shah who served as member of Taliban High Council known as "Quetta Shura" based in Quetta city of Pakistan was a notorious Taliban commander in Jawzjan province and his physical elimination could serve as major blow to the militants in Jawzjan and adjoining provinces," the official asserted.

Taliban outfit has yet to make comment.

Jawzjan province with Shiberghan as its capital 390 km north of Kabul has been the scene of Taliban-led militancy over the past few years and fighting between security forces and militants has been continuing in Faizabad and Aqcha districts over the past one week.
