WINDHOEK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Customary practices such as early marriages are contributing to high incidences of early teenage pregnancies in Namibia, an official said here on Friday.

National Assembly Information Officer Ndahafa Kaukungua said in a statement that teenage pregnancies are still on the increase despite the family planning services offered at health facilities.

The statement was made about an outreach program on the promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the country.

"Young girls are prevented from exercising their sexual and reproductive health and rights as young girls cannot have bargaining rights in a customary marriage to an adult," the statement said.

Kaukungua said the outreach program, initially conducted in a few regions, will be expanded to more regions around the country.
