Russian envoy to visit Iran on Syrian crisis

TEHRAN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Russian special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, will arrive in Iran's capital Tehran on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in Syria with senior Iranian officials, Financial Tribune daily reported.

He is scheduled to meet Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, ahead of the next round of Syria peace talks in Kazakhstan's capital city of Astana, slated for mid-September.

The Astana initiative is jointly organized by Iran, Russia and Turkey and aims to settle the lingering deadly conflict in Syria.
