Afghan airstrike kills six militants in northern province

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least six militants were killed and four others wounded following an airstrike in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, an local official said Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday evening in Khawja Pak, an area on the northern outskirt of provincial capital Kunduz city, where Afghan air force targeted a militants' hideout, leaving six insurgents dead and four others wounded, Abdul Khalil, spokesman of army Division 20 Pamir based in the region, told Xinhua.

Eyewitnesses confirmed the incident and said up to 10 militants have been killed or wounded in the bombing.

No troop or civilians have been reported dead in the incident.

The Taliban insurgents have not confirmed their colleagues' death.

Fighting has escalated in Afghanistan as the Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where Taliban have been recruiting from the youth.
