Indonesia's Palembang to host Asia Pacific beach volleyball championship

JAKARTA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's South Sumatra province capital of Palembang will host 2017 Asia Pacific beach volleyball championship from Oct. 18-22, attracting the teams from 14 countries and regions, an official said on Friday.

"Teams that would vie in the Asia Pacific championship comprised of 26 men and 18 women from those countries and regions," Slamet Mulyanto, head of beach volley section Indonesian Volley Ball Association (PBVSI) said.

Among countries and regions taking part in the event are Saudi Arabia, Australia, China's Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand, he added.

Matches of the championship would be held Palembang's landmark stadium of Jakabaring, the venue that would host the upcoming 18th Asian Games in 2018.

He said the venue would be completely ready to hold the championship by Oct. 10 as the organizing committee is conducting various preparations at present, including setting up the beach volley lawns in the stadium complex by adding beach sands.

The championship would be regarded as the warming up round for Asian teams prior to the Asiad which would be co-hosted by Palembang and Jakarta.
